This really depends upon how hands-on you want to be. I consider there to be two major choices in this category. We’ll start with HostGator then go to GoDaddy, and then I’ll explain the differences between the two and who I would choose.
HostGator has five different levels to enter the business, with the least expensive, yet still robust, coming in at a mere $24.95 per month. Hey, their marketing people can do it better than I can. Here’s what they have to say about choosing HostGator as your provider:
Reseller Web Hosting
You would be amazed how easy, lucrative, and cheap it is to become your very own web hosting company! We give you all the tools and support needed to have you up and running in just a few minutes time. All of our reseller hosting plans allow you to create unlimited web sites under your own packages, prices, and brand. The best part is that you keep 100% of the money you collect.
How does reseller hosting work?
You have a reseller hosting account control panel called Web Host Manager. WHM is where you go to create your customer accounts. After filling in their account information you click “create.” This will instantly set them up with their very own control panel called cPanel. This is where they will go to administer their website. Once they are logged into cPanel they can create subdomains, email addresses, change passwords, and much more without requiring any help from you or us.
Another interesting choice comes from the ever-present GoDaddy.
Perhaps the best way to do this is to show the differences between the two.
Cost: Over the course of a year, if you pick the lowest tier from HostGator and the middle tier from GoDaddy, you will pay more with HostGator at about $300, while GoDaddy is only $199. With GoDaddy, you have to pay all at once, while HostGator allows you to pay monthly.
Earnings:There is the potential to earn more, short-term, with HostGator, which lets you keep every dime you bring in. The only problem with this is that you have to keep a sharp eye on the amount of bandwidth your customers are using or you’ll have to start moving up the plan tiers. At GoDaddy, you earn the difference between the wholesale costs (which are good) and what you charge your customers. That’s not nearly as good as “every dime you bring in” but consider that you can sell as much as you want, no restrictions, for as long as you want. Long after you would have sold out your space at HostGator, you can keep selling customers at GoDaddy, and they will bring in residuals year after year.
Customer Service: THIS IS THE BIGGIE.At HostGator, as at most places, when your customers have problems they either have to call or email you personally. At GoDaddy, you never have to talk to your customers. They sign up and then use GoDaddy customer service, which is superlative.
GoDaddy also offers an array of very professional looking site designs to call your own. With a logo here and an update there, you will look as professional as GoDaddy themselves. And, of course, you get a lot of freebies on the marketing side, like $175 in ad credits.
But for me? For me it’s the no customer service duties. Sure, they are the whole package, but NO CUSTOMER SERVICE DUTIES!
Seriously, do you want to be really successful at selling hosting and then spend 24 hours a day fielding questions? That’s a big deal and why I’m selecting GoDaddy.
